Galaxy Watches.. Samsung introduced the Galaxy Gear, a smartwatch with a 1.6-inch square touchscreen, when it first joined the market in 2013. However, they have kept with circular screens since the release of the first Galaxy Watch, reflecting the practice of other Android wristwatch manufacturers. According to recent speculations, Samsung may be prepared to make another change and may contemplate a square design for their next Wear OS watch.
According to SamMobile, Samsung is thinking of going back to its previous Galaxy Gear wearables’ square shape for future smartwatches. According to reports, the “idea is enthusiastically being considered internally and it’s very much on the cards that the switch is going to happen.”
There are little more specifics in the story, and it’s unclear whether we should hold out on seeing this modification until later in the year or wait for future versions of the Galaxy Watch 7 series. It would have leaked by now if Samsung had intended such a significant redesign for its 2024 Galaxy Watch series. Expectations of a squarish display for the Galaxy Watch 7 are low given the absence of rumors.
The revolving circular bezel of Samsung’s Galaxy Watch smartwatches is well-known for making it easy to navigate the user interface and lengthy menus. It’s unclear, however, how the firm would include the spinning bezel if it decides to use a squarish display for its next Wear OS devices. Since the skin of One UI Watch is presently designed for circular screens, Samsung will also need to adjust it for the shift in display format.
For many years, Apple has used a square display on the Apple Watch. A square display may show more information and facilitate typing more easily than a circular one. Thus, if Wear OS is optimized for a squarish display by Samsung (and Google), the 2025 Galaxy Watch may provide similar advantages. With all of the competitors’ smartwatches having circular displays, this decision will also help Samsung’s Wear OS models stand out.
Samsung may decide against moving forward with a square display in favor of a circular one for its next timepieces as internal planning has not been completed.
